Some residents at Ashfield House, Stourbridge, had been reluctant to take part in the activities on offer at Ashfield Gardens, a short walk away on the same site.
The garden is a popular place where people can learn horticultural skills and enjoy outdoor life. But the busy site can be stressful for the residents of Ashfield House, who have complex needs. During
lockdown, they’ve had the garden all to themselves.
Before lockdown, Peter had visited the garden occasionally, but now he comes along nearly every day. ‘I’ve been painting the new animal shed,’ he says. ‘I like being outside.
‘It’s great having Peter’s help with the painting,’ says Hannah. ‘And while the garden is quieter, he and his housemates have got to know their way around.’
Hannah and the team are planning to build on these positive first steps: ‘We’re looking at everyone’s skills and abilities, to give them a role that suits them, and build their confidence,’ she explains. ‘So our new recruits can welcome everyone back after lockdown!’
