Mental Health Awareness Week 2025

Mental Health Awareness Week 2025

The power of community

Each year, Mental Health Awareness Week offers us all a chance to reflect on the importance of our mental wellbeing, raise awareness about mental health issues, and explore how we can support one another to thrive.

Organised by the Mental Health Foundation, the week takes place in May and shines a spotlight on a different theme each year. This year, the theme is community — a timely and powerful reminder of just how much our connections to one another matter.

Why community matters for our mental health

Feeling connected to others, having people to turn to, and being part of something bigger than ourselves are vital for our emotional wellbeing. Whether it’s a neighbour who says hello, a friend to talk to over a cup of tea, or a local group you can join and contribute to — these bonds give us purpose, help reduce feelings of isolation and offer support during difficult times.

Research shows that social relationships are one of the most protective factors against mental health problems. Community offers more than just practical support — it gives us a sense of belonging.

Building meaningful connections at Camphill Village Trust

At Camphill Village Trust, we’ve always placed strong, supportive relationships at the heart of what we do. We believe that everyone — regardless of ability — deserves to feel valued, included, and part of a caring community. Camphill Village Trust is a national charity supporting adults with learning disabilities, autism, mental health problems, and other complex needs to live meaningful lives in vibrant, inclusive communities.

Through our supported living model, we provide the people we support with learning and other disabilities the opportunity to live as independently as possible while remaining closely connected to others. Our communities are built on mutual respect, where people are encouraged to form genuine friendships, support each other, and take part in everyday life together.

In addition, our Green Care programme offers a wealth of nature-based activities that not only teach valuable life skills but also create opportunities for connection and belonging. Whether it’s gardening, animal care, woodwork or arts and crafts, these inclusive sessions are designed to bring people together in shared purpose, encouraging friendships and improving wellbeing.

Nature itself has proven mental health benefits — reducing stress, improving mood, and increasing feelings of calm. When combined with social interaction and purposeful activity, it becomes a powerful tool for emotional wellbeing.

How can you get involved?

There are lots of ways to take part in Mental Health Awareness Week:

  • Follow us on social media to hear personal stories and insights from people in our communities
  • Share your own experiences or messages of support using the hashtag #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek to help spread the word
  • Attend or organise an event or activity in your area that promotes mental wellbeing
  • Donate to Camphill Village Trust to help us continue creating safe, inclusive spaces where people can thrive, grow and feel connected

Together, we can make a difference — one relationship, one conversation, one community at a time.

Stay tuned for more stories and content from our communities throughout the week.
