Person-centred support shapes everything we do at Camphill Village Trust
At Camphill Village Trust, we believe that everyone should have the opportunity to live a life of opportunity, filled with purpose, choice and connection. That’s why we take a person-centred approach to everything we do.
But what exactly does “person-centred support” mean?
Person-centred support is all about putting the person at the heart of their own care and support. It’s not about fitting people into services — it’s about shaping services around each individual. We take time to understand what matters most to the person: their strengths, interests, aspirations, and the kind of life they want to lead.
No two people are the same — so no two support plans are the same either.
Person-centred support means working with people. It’s about listening, building trusting relationships, and supporting people to make choices and decisions about their lives.
This approach runs through every part of life in our communities — from where someone lives and who supports them, to how they spend their day.
For some, that might mean taking part in our Nature-Based Therapies and Skills programme — spending time outdoors, growing food, or caring for animals. For others, it might involve meaningful work and volunteering, learning new skills, or expressing themselves through arts and crafts. Whatever path someone chooses, we walk alongside them to make sure they have the right support in place to thrive.
Take Hannah, for example. She’s been part of our St Albans Community for over five years. While many people we support enjoy our nature-based activities, Hannah knew that her interests lay elsewhere. Every Wednesday, she independently volunteers at Bernard Heath Junior School — and has done for over a year. Hannah has completed extensive training in safeguarding and plays a vital role during the lunchtime period: opening food packages, helping to organise games, and creating a safe, welcoming space.
“Laughing with children, laughing and playing with them. I love telling them jokes!” says Hannah.
Before she began at the school, Hannah struggled to find an activity that truly excited her. But with the right support, she’s now thriving — and looking to the future.
Ultimately, person-centred support is about recognising each person’s potential and creating conditions where that potential can flourish.
Because when people are truly seen, heard, and supported as individuals — that’s when meaningful lives can grow.
