Staying Safe Online with the Involve Me Group

To mark Safer Internet Day, our Involve Me group have been exploring ways to stay safe online…

And have created a series of easy-read posters to share their top tips across our communities.

The Involve Me group is a cross-community co-production project bringing together people we support from across Camphill Village Trust. The group meets each week online, giving everyone the opportunity to have a say on different topics and share ideas that matter to them.

Over the past year, Involve Me has looked at important everyday topics such as healthy eating, keeping safe out and about, and online safety. Their online safety project covers issues like catfishing, scam emails and texts, and using social media responsibly.

Learning how to stay safe online

Being online helps us connect with friends, keep in touch with family, and explore our interests. But it’s also important to understand how to protect ourselves and others.

According to the Good Things Foundation, a significant number of people with learning disabilities are using digital devices — with recent Ofcom data showing that 61% use a smartphone. However, this rate is still below levels of use by non-disabled audiences.

That’s why it’s so important to engage people with learning disabilities in digital inclusion and online safety projects — breaking down barriers, building confidence, and making sure everyone has the chance to stay safe and connected online.

Working together, the group discussed different online situations and shared their own experiences. From recognising fake profiles to knowing what to do if something doesn’t feel right, everyone had the chance to learn and contribute ideas.

Sharing their learning through easy-read posters

Once they had gathered their ideas, the group designed easy-read posters to help others across our communities learn about online safety too. Each poster focuses on a different theme — from avoiding scams to keeping your personal information private.

Some of their top tips include:
✅ Don’t ever call the phone number on a scam email. Or click the link in a suspicious email.
✅ Check who messages are really from before clicking any links.
✅ Be suspicious of conversations online that get too personal too quickly.
✅ If something feels wrong, tell someone you trust.

Their accessible posters are now being shared in our communities, helping everyone remember how to use the internet safely and responsibly.

Co-production in action

The Involve Me project is part of our co-production work at Camphill Village Trust — ensuring the people we support have a voice in shaping projects and campaigns that affect everyday life.

By leading this Safer Internet Day campaign, the Involve Me group are showing how everyone can play a part in making the online world a safer, kinder place to be.
