Growing up, school was difficult for Harriet and bullying left her feeling isolated and unhappy. Her confidence was at an all-time low.
Like many adults with learning disabilities, Harriet found that society was not designed to give her the opportunities or support she needed to thrive.
She feared she would spend her life “doing nothing”. Harriet wanted connection, purpose and somewhere she truly belonged.
In 2010, Harriet moved to Grange Village, part of Camphill Village Trust and the move transformed her life.
Sixteen years later, support workers describe her as “the heart of the community”. Harriet has built strong friendships and feels surrounded by people who are supportive - somewhere she belongs.
She enjoys dance classes, arts activities, karaoke nights and trips into town with friends. With tailored support, Harriet is working towards living in her own flat within Grange Village one day.
“Watching the leaps and bounds that Harriet has taken over the last five years has been absolutely astounding, that’s what makes my job worthwhile.”
– Drew, Support Worker
Volunteering, Purpose and Confidence
Harriet has had the opportunity to follow her passions. Tailored volunteering opportunities have given her confidence, structure and purpose.
At Taurus Crafts’ Zero Waste shop, she helps customers and works confidently on the till, developing valuable skills and independence.
Harriet loves dogs. Every week she volunteers at a nearby dog kennels, which she calls her “dream job”.
Caring for dogs and walking them through woodland trails has had a huge impact on her wellbeing.
The routine, physical activity and friendships she has gained through volunteering have transformed her confidence and helped her feel valued, capable and proud of what she can achieve.
Finding Peace, Joy and Connection Through Nature
Living in the Gloucestershire countryside and taking part in the nature-based therapies and skills programme, also gives Harriet a strong connection to nature, something that brings her joy, calm and happiness every day.
“I heard a woodpecker outside my window the other day.”
Harriet loves walking through the forest and spending time outdoors, she takes part in a weekly walking group with friends. “I can walk for miles”, she says happily. These experiences may seem small, but for Harriet, they are extraordinary.
Your kindness could help provide the support, encouragement and community that changes lives.
Building Independence and Living an Extraordinary Life
Harriet’s story shows the life-changing impact of support, community and opportunity. But many adults with learning disabilities, autism and mental health support needs are still facing loneliness, isolation and poor mental wellbeing because they lack the support they deserve.
77% of disabled people aged 18-34 reported feeling lonely (Sense.org.uk)
Statutory funding covers basic care. Donations make the extraordinary possible. With continued support, more people like Harriet can experience friendship, community, and pride.
So, please donate to Camphill Village Trust, and help more people live extraordinary lives.
