Shared Lives Week is a chance to celebrate an incredible scheme that’s changing lives across the country, including right here at Camphill Village Trust.
Shared Lives is a unique type of support where adults with learning disabilities, autism or other support needs are carefully matched with a carer who welcomes them into their home and life. The support is based on shared experiences, mutual respect, and genuine connection.
Whether it’s living together full-time, spending regular time during the day, or offering short/respite breaks, Shared Lives creates space for people to grow in confidence and independence – all within a supportive, family-style environment.
In the West Midlands, Camphill Village Trust offers three types of Shared Lives support:
Each arrangement is tailored to the needs and preferences of the individual and carer. And it works because it’s built on real relationships.
Subia is one of our incredible Shared Lives carers, offering respite care to Jessie, a person supported by our Shared Lives scheme.
When Jessie visits, the two make the most of every moment together. Whether it’s going for walks, meeting friends and family, enjoying meals and coffees out, or simply exploring the local community, their time together is full of laughter, fun and meaningful connection.
For Jessie, this is more than just a break; it’s a chance to spend time in a warm, welcoming environment where she’s valued, included and supported. And for Subia, it’s a truly rewarding experience.
“We do everything together. It is just nice seeing them smile. Building that relationship as well… It’s the best thing I’ve done, working for Shared Lives. I’ll never give it up.” – Subia
Shared Lives offers so much more than traditional care models. It creates real friendships and opens up opportunities for everyone involved:
