Sean’s story is one worth celebrating. Through our Shared Lives service in the West Midlands, a unique service that matches adults with learning disabilities with supportive families for long-term, short-term, or day placements, Sean has built confidence, independence, and meaningful relationships. Now, he’s reached an exciting new milestone: securing a full-time job.
Shared Lives is often described as similar to foster care, but for adults. It offers a more personal, flexible alternative to traditional care, where people are supported to live, grow, and thrive as part of a family and community. For many, it opens doors to new experiences, skills, and opportunities, just like it has for Sean.
Hear from Reena, Shared Lives Area Coordinator, who shares more about Sean’s journey, the impact of Shared Lives, and why moments like this matter so much…
“Sean shared some truly wonderful news with me and Shared Lives. His excitement was clear from the moment he began speaking, and with good reason he has officially been offered a full time position, marking a significant step forward in his journey towards greater independence, stability, and confidence.
Sean explained that he attended his interview on Wednesday 18th March, and, in an incredibly positive turn of events, received confirmation of the job offer the very next day, Thursday 19th March 2026. The quick turnaround not only highlights the strong impression Sean made during the interview but also demonstrates the employer’s enthusiasm in welcoming him on board.
In this new role, Sean will be working Monday to Friday, something he is especially pleased about. For him, the structure of regular daytime hours brings a sense of continuity, routine, and security that he has been looking for. It also gives him the opportunity to enjoy his weekends fully something he has not been able to do consistently in his previous roles. The predictability of these hours will also support his wellbeing, allowing him to balance work, rest, social activities, and personal commitments more comfortably.
Sean shared that his supervisor will be Steve, someone he had mentioned positively before. Knowing that he will have a supportive and familiar supervisor has reassured him and boosted his confidence about stepping into this new chapter. Having a manager he already feels comfortable with gives him a sense of belonging and sets a strong foundation for his success in this role.
As we spoke, Sean reflected on how meaningful this achievement is to him. He described feeling proud, relieved, and excited because he has worked hard to get to this point, relieved to have secured a role with stability, and excited about what this new opportunity means for his future. This job is more than just employment for Sean; it represents progress, self growth, and his ability to move forward even when faced with challenges.
Sean also showed real thoughtfulness in considering how his new work routine will fit around his social life. With his schedule becoming more structured, he explained that evening activities would now be more suitable for him. When asked about the upcoming bowling event, Sean immediately expressed interest and confirmed that he would definitely like to attend. He sounded genuinely enthusiastic and said he is looking forward to hearing more details once arrangements are finalised. His enthusiasm shows that he intends to continue staying socially connected despite his busy new schedule, another sign of his positive mindset and commitment to maintaining a balanced lifestyle.
This good news story highlights not only Sean’s achievement in securing a new full time job but also the personal progress he has made in building confidence, independence, and a greater sense of purpose. It also reflects the value of consistent support, encouragement, and the opportunities that come when someone is given the space to grow and succeed.
Sean’s journey is a reminder that with commitment, resilience, and the right support structures, people can achieve remarkable milestones. His new role promises stability, growth, and a fresh start and there is no doubt he has worked hard to earn it. Congratulations to Sean on this fantastic accomplishment, and here’s to a bright and successful future ahead!”
