The Shared Lives bowling night on Friday 22nd May 2026 at Hollywood Bowl, Bentley Bridge in Wolverhampton was a fantastic example of how social activities can bring people together in a meaningful and enjoyable way. Facilitated and hosted by Reena and Jayne, Area Coordinators, the evening began at 5pm and quickly filled with excitement as everyone chose their bowling balls, set up their lanes and prepared for a friendly but competitive game. Fourteen people who use the service attended, and the energy in the room was brilliant from the start.

The bowling itself created a natural buzz. People cheered each other on, celebrated every strike and spare, and shared plenty of laughter when the ball drifted into the gutter. Some individuals surprised themselves with how well they played, while others enjoyed the fun of trying something new. There was lots of playful banter between lanes, with people comparing scores, giving each other tips and encouraging those who were a little nervous at first. As the games went on, confidence grew, people became more independent with their turns, more vocal in cheering others on and more relaxed in joining conversations.
What stood out most was how the bowling helped people connect. The shared experience of playing, waiting for turns, celebrating wins and laughing at the near misses created a natural space for friendships to form. Several people who don’t usually mix found themselves chatting, joking and supporting each other. This is exactly what Shared Lives aims to achieve: bringing people together, building relationships, promoting inclusion and helping individuals feel part of a wider community. The bowling lanes became a place where people felt comfortable, valued and involved.

To top it off, the evening held a particularly meaningful moment for Reena. One of the people who uses the service gave her a heartfelt thank‑you card, expressing how happy she is in her Shared Lives arrangement and thanking Reena for “everything you have done for me.” This gesture captured the true impact of Shared Lives, the trust, the relationships and the difference that consistent support can make in someone’s life. It was a reminder of why the work feels so rewarding and important.
The atmosphere throughout the night was warm, lively and full of genuine joy. It felt like a proper Friday night out, fun, relaxed and full of laughter. People left smiling, talking about their scores, sharing their favourite moments and asking when the next social event would be. The positive energy showed how important these gatherings are for wellbeing, confidence and connection.
Looking ahead, there are lots of ideas for future Shared Lives socials inspired by the success of this one. Suggestions include a cinema trip, crazy golf, a summer picnic, karaoke, a group meal or a visit to a board‑game café. Whatever comes next, this bowling night has set a brilliant standard for future events, and the thoughtful hosting by Reena and Jayne helped make it a memorable and meaningful evening for everyone involved.
